Nothing really surprising there. I think it comes down to dollar figures, and with ~$1.5M in cap space to play with (and potentially next season’s lower cap coming into play), Sutter’s got to be careful not to back himself into a corner.
McElhinney’s play so far hasn’t given any reason to doubt him as a back-up, even if he’s still got the monkey on his back of not winning a game yet.
The more interesting component here, I think, is where exactly McElhinney fits into Calgary’s long-term plans. With Irving and Keetley in the development pipeline and Kiprusoff as the starter for the foreseeable future, it’s not a stretch to suggest that McElhinney could be a career back-up in this organization.
